It&#8217;s easier to bend and install compared to some other insulation materials. This flexibility also means that the cable can withstand more mechanical stress without the insulation cracking or breaking. For instance, in underground cable installations, where the cable might have to be bent around corners or through tight spaces, XLPE &#8211; insulated copper core cables are a top choice.<\/p>\n<p>However, XLPE also has its drawbacks. It can be more expensive than PVC, which is a consideration for some projects with tight budgets. And while it&#8217;s more resistant to heat than PVC, it still has its limits. Think about your vacuum cleaner cord. Chances are, it&#8217;s a copper core cable insulated with rubber. Rubber also has good resistance to water and some chemicals, which is useful in wet or corrosive environments.<\/p>\n<p>But rubber isn&#8217;t all sunshine and rainbows. It can age over time, especially when exposed to sunlight and ozone. As it ages, it can become brittle and crack, which compromises the insulation. And like PVC, some types of rubber can release toxic substances when burned.<\/p>\n<p>Silicone is another interesting insulation material. Silicone has some amazing properties. It can handle a wide range of temperatures, from really cold to extremely hot. This makes it suitable for use in harsh environments, like in aerospace or high &#8211; altitude applications.<\/p>\n<p>Silicone &#8211; insulated copper core cables are also very flexible, even in cold temperatures when other materials might become stiff. They&#8217;re resistant to moisture, chemicals, and UV radiation. So, if you&#8217;re looking for a cable that can stand up to a lot of abuse, silicone might be the way to go.<\/p>\n<p>The downside? Silicone is pretty expensive. It&#8217;s not the first choice for your average household wiring project. And while it has great overall performance, the manufacturing process for silicone &#8211; insulated cables can be more complex and time &#8211; consuming.<\/p>\n<p>Fluoropolymers, like PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), are also used for cable insulation. PTFE has outstanding electrical insulation properties. It&#8217;s non &#8211; flammable, which is a huge plus for safety. It can also operate at very high temperatures without degrading.<\/p>\n<p>These cables are often used in high &#8211; tech applications, like in the telecommunications industry or in some medical equipment. But just like silicone, fluoropolymers are expensive. The production process is also more involved, which drives up the cost.<\/p>\n<p>Now, when I&#8217;m working with customers, I always guide them to choose the right insulation material based on their specific needs. If it&#8217;s a small &#8211; scale residential project with a tight budget, PVC might be the best option.
